EARLY AND FORCED MARRIAGE IN POOR URBAN AREAS OF BANGLADESH

In Urban slums, early and forced marriage is very common. This practice is driven by complex interplay of a range of socio-cultural, religious, economic and political factors.

Living conditions in urban slums is extremely poor; many people share only one room. Early marriage is one way of reducing the family size as well. Along with that, which value chastity of a girl and associate family honor with her virginity, propagate early marriage of girls.

This study conducted by Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) to explore the issue of early and forced marriage in poor urban areas in greater depth and provide a priority focus for the future urban programming to reduce such practice.
